The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club/Republic Bank August Holiday Camp ended on Friday last and has been described by official of the Club and its cricket teams as the best ever. Fifty Grade Six students drawn from
across Region 6 completed the Camp which aimed at assisting them to make a successful transition from the Primary to Secondary level. The students were taught several subjects: English A, Maths, Social Studies, Integrated Science and Spanish, while they were also exposed to basic coaching in the disciplines of cricket, basketball and volleyball. Students were also involved in numerous lectures on topics of importance to them including Peer Pressure, Drug Abuse, HIV/AIDS, Suicide, Public Manners, Importance of Education, Table Manners among others.
Camp Director Rohan Etwaru stated that each of the Students performed exceptionally well and are now fully prepared not only for an entrance into Secondary School but also involvement in sports. They were also able to enhance their socialisation skills and develop group cohesion. Among the special projects undertaken by the students were reading a literature book and been assessed individually, learning to spell forty five new words and learning to play cricket.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for its continued investment in youths and for supporting the work of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club over the years. Foster urged the students to develop a habit of reading, research and an enquiring mind as they strive to fulfill their personal ambitions. A stern looking Foster also advised the attentive youths to always Say No to Drugs, Crime and Suicide and to always seek the advice of their elders. Sports, he stated is a positive avenue for them to get involved in, as it not only would keep them physical fit but would keep them from the evil grasp of Satan and his negative influence. Foster, also pledged the Club and its cricket teams assistance to the students in their personal development. He expressed gratitude to Rose Hall Town Republic Bank Manager Harry Ghaness and his deputy Seema Brijmal.
Ezla Moore was named Best Student after achieving an overall, pass rate of 93 percent. Moore was also named Best Spanish Student while the other awardees were Best English Student – Latchman Sanichar, Best Social Studies Student – Tyrese Rodney, Best Integrated Science Student – Justin Edwards, Most Improved Student – Tatiana Hintzen. Each of the awardees received a special collection of educational materials.
The Camp was organised by the Educational and Sports Committee of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and the cricket teams of the club – RHT Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Females and Gizmos & Gadgets First Division and Under-21 teams.
