Chief Safety Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Mr. Mark Lewis, says that the general public needs to be aware that there are rules and regulations by which the hospital is being governed, while he also emphasized the importance of these policies being respected and observed.
The cautionary remarks came after an incident in which a female security officer attached to the health institution was assaulted by visitors who were angered by her warnings against overloading an elevator.
According to reports, on August 4, 2015, Ms. Claudine Sinclair, of Friendship Squatting Area, EBD, was on duty at the new inpatient building when she was assaulted.
Kaieteur News understands that Sinclair had instructed a number of visitors to use the stairway which leads to the two upper flats of the building after the elevator had met its capacity. However one female was not too pleased by the request; despite not causing trouble at that time, she was clearly annoyed. After completing her visit, the woman then returned for a confrontation with the security guard.
She immediately launched a physical assault on Sinclair who during the time of assault was reportedly held by a male companion of the abusive woman.
Luckily, the Home Safety Security Mr. Braithwaite was close-by and came to the aid of Sinclair. Criticisms against the operations and services of the GPHC were voiced by angry visitors. The situation was brought under control after Police were called in and the individuals involved in the incident were taken into custody.
Sinclair has since obtained a medical certificate which will most likely be held for evidence in the assault. It was revealed that she had suffered injuries to soft tissues about the body.
The Practitioner who conducted the examination declared that the injuries “do not pose immediate danger to the life of the patient and will not provoke permanent disability or disfigurement.”
In the wake of the incident, Lewis said that “people must respect the hospital protocol with the use of the elevator and be mature enough to understand the rules of the hospital.”
He also stressed that there is an active complaint desk which is under the Quality Improvement Department office. The desk, he explained, is for persons with ‘genuine’ concerns about the operating services of the hospital.
Lewis advised that in the future, persons should not opt to take matters into their own hands but should rather utilize the Complaint Desk, and avoid recurrences of such an incident.
