Police are running checks on an ex-soldier who was arrested on Monday night after he crashed the car he had earlier hijacked from a West Coast Demerara taxi driver.
The ex-soldier is presently under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he is being treated for injuries he sustained as a result of the crash.
Another man who was working as his accomplice managed to escape and is being sought by the police.
Kaieteur News understands that at about 20:30 hours on Monday taxi driver Lawrence Singh was hired by a man at the taxi base at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, to go to Mc Doom on the East Bank.
Singh never suspected anything until at Mc Doom when another man armed with a firearm held him up.
The passenger along with the other man took away Singh’s motor vehicle, $10,000 and a cell phone.
During the robbery Singh raised an alarm and neighbouring residents responded and the armed man escaped, while the passenger drove away with the motor car.
Assisted by another motorist Singh gave chase and the police also responded to the report made.
The perpetrator managed to make it as far as Sheriff Street with the stolen car, which collided with another motor vehicle. He had received minor injuries and was taken to the GPHC by the police who had been hot on his tail.
He will definitely face charges as soon as he recovers.
