A big effort from little 13-year-old leg-spinner Wayne Bollers helped Malteenoes under-17s orchestrate ‘mission impossible’ and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat from the touring Digicel Harvard Cricket Academy of T&T as the Thomas lands team successfully defended a paltry 79 at the Malteenoes ground yesterday.
The home team won the toss and batted first in sweltering heat on a slow track and heavy outfield and only Carl Kumar (37) offered any resistance to off-spinning all-rounder Keon Mason’s 5-18 and pacer Rolando Ragoo’s 3-7.
But the visitor’s batting was even more shocking as they were bowled out for 72 in 21.3 overs despite 21 at the top of the order from the burly Mason.
The pint-sized 13-year-old Bollers first held a stunning catch at short cover to separate the openers with 17 runs on the board, before taking 3-9 from five overs of teasing leg-breaks and was well supported by Andrew Persaud (2-3) as the ‘Trinis’ sunk to their sixth defeat in a game they should have easily won.
Persaud, the son of cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud, showed plenty of patience as he faced 37 balls to make six and along with Renaldo McGarrell, who made five from 21 balls, give MSC a solid if slow 21-run opening start before Mason, the son of ex-T&T Keeper Keno Mason, removed them both in the space of a run.
Kumar, who struck a confident 37 with four fours and a six, was just beginning to look dangerous when he was removed Kylon Jacob and when Mason snapped up Jerimiah Scott (9) MSC had slipped to 27-4.
MSC slumped from 54-4 to 79 from 28 overs as Mason, captured four of the first five wickets as he took his wicket tally on tour to 14. Left-arm spinner Sanjay Browne (1-20 from 7 overs) was consistent throughout and finished with eight wickets while Ragoo was on a hat-trick as he finished the tour on a personal high.
When the visitors began what seemed to be an easy run-chase, Triston Jackman (5) was taken by Bollers off pacer Damani Thomas at 17 -1.
But Mason failed to find the gaps with several powerful shots and soon hit a catch to mid-off as Bollers, watched by his father, sister and brother, fligthed the ball tantalizingly to bowl Jacob (4) and had Jadon Bryce (2) caught and bowled before returning to polish off the innings by having Browne caught down the leg-side.
The team from T&T was scheduled to depart Guyana this morning.
