Bahamian sprinter, Petra McDonald arrived in Guyana yesterday for this weekend’s Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic VI, scheduled for the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in Linden. McDonald said she is here to “race and have
a good time”.
The Bahamas’ national athlete, whose pet event is the 100m Hurdles, will compete in the 100m and 200m this weekend with personal best times of 11.6 seconds and 23.89 seconds. She has run at every major meet except the World Championships and Olympics for Bahamas.
“I’m just here to run. Everyone is a winner regardless of what place they get. I’m very optimistic because I have been running long enough,” McDonald said after a brief workout at Police Sports Club Ground following her arrival in Guyana for the first time.
McDonald will race against some of the fastest women in Guyana that includes Aniqua Powley from the Guyana Defence Force, Kezia Bess from Guyana Police Progressive Youth Club among others, inclusive of the two Jamaican athletes.
The Women 100m and 200m sprint events has attracted a total of 36 entries with the 200m set as one of the International events. McDonald last represented Bahamas at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mexico late last year.
She is a graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina where she studied Chemistry and Psychology. The muscular, exceptional student-athlete is expected to pose a challenge in the two sprint events she is registered to compete in this weekend.
