Heavy rain and winds around 3:53pm brought a premature end to the second day of the World Longa Range Shooting Championships yesterday which is being contested at Camp Perry, Ohio, USA.
Shooters had just commenced the third and final range (1000) having already completed 800 and 900 but rain put paid to the completion of this range forcing the executive committee of the International Confederation of Fullbore Rifle Association (ICFRA) to adjust the schedule for the final two days, today and tomorrow.
Competition which has been very intense and close will be at the 900 and 1000 yards ranges this morning firing off at 08:00hrs with another 1000 yards shoot set for the afternoon session with some 403 shooters taking aim in this string shooting format which sees shooters also scoring for their colleagues in groups of six.
Yesterday, three West Indian marksmen, shot a possible at 800 yards; Guyanese Mahendra Persaud, Lennox Braithwaite and Leo Romalho, five of their colleagues missed out by a single point.
On the first day, Saturday when one range was shot, 800, Romalho and Persaud also shot a possible to underline their form ahead of the Palma Match (Team) which will be contested on Thursday and Friday.
Team Captain, Major Denis John Nelson commenting on the performances of the 21 West Indian shooters who are competing in the World Long Range Championships stated that they have been doing very well so far noting that the seasoned riflemen have been holding their own.
Major Nelson stated that the form of the senior shooters looks encouraging for the Palma Team Match while the younger shooters are coming on also. He made mention of Barbadian Jason Wood along with the Guyanese duo of Peter Persaud and Sherwin Felicen as promising young prospects.
At 800 yards on day 1 a total of 171 shooters shot a possible while yesterday at same range, 242 achieved a similar feat. This underlines the fact that these are the best shots in the world and there is no room for complacency, only consistency.
