Aug 10, 2015 Editorial
The murder of 21 women in the first six months of 2015 is appalling and is totally unacceptable for a country with just under 300,000 women and 110,000 young girls. It appears that women have become an endangered species in Guyana and despite the valiant efforts by the current government and the police to prevent such heinous crimes, the death toll continues to rise.
The situation is poised to escalate unless the entire nation gets involved by invoking the power of the Almighty to save not only women from being murdered but also prevent men from committing such barbaric crimes and protect the children who are left without parents. This should be the inspirational and spiritual call from the President, the Government, the Churches and civil society groups in the country.
The power of prayer should be incrementally invoked to save our women, men and children and ensure the process of justice. It was less than two months ago when three men were arrested and charged with the murder of their paramours. While the arrests are a plus for the Guyana Police Force which painstakingly put the cases together with sufficient evidence to take them to court, it is not good for women in particular and society in general.
On May 11, 2015, there was some sort of divine intervention in one way or the other that helped the APNU+AFC Coalition to defeat the PPP at the polls after being in office for 23 years. That divine intervention is needed now more than ever to save the women of Guyana from being murdered. Relatives and friends can no longer bear the pain and sorrow of the deaths of their loved ones and the country cannot afford to lose so many young women in the prime of their reproductive years.
The majority of people in the country believes in the power of prayer and will pray continuously when things are not going right for them. Perhaps they have become a bit lackadaisical in their supplication to the Almighty in that regard, but with the murder of so many women in such a short span, the time seems right for the nation to look to the Almighty once more for guidance and intervention.
Therefore the need for continuous dedication to spirituality is more crucial at this time in the country’s history than any other. Democracy is at stake in the sense that the freedom to life, liberty and happiness for women in Guyana is in jeopardy. Their blood is being shed for nothing of consequence. They need security for their protection. The nation should heed the call of Nelson Mandela who said, “Freedom would be meaningless without security in the home and in the streets.”
While some remedial measures may be found in the policies of the government to protect women, the high murder rate shows that they are not enough. Comprehensive security and enjoyment of freedom for all will only be achieved when coupled with the determination and dedication of the Police and the people’s power in prayer.
It is generally known that a small cadre of men in the country for whatever reason—love, hatred, passion or suspicion—will beat their spouses to prove a point. Licks, as it is commonly called is a form of punishment used by these men to control the behavior of women. Sometimes the licks result in murder as some women are chopped and stabbed, others are strangled and shot.
In 2015, the country still has a formidable amount of men who see themselves as privileged and believe that they are entitled to beat up on women. The frightening thing is that some of these men who are high achievers and from middle class backgrounds believe that beating or murdering women is part of their culture. So the rationale that only the poor or uneducated men resort to violence or murder of their spouses is both silly and untrue. Murders are occurring in homes across all classes and multi-ethnic divide.
It appears that some women are victims because of their socio-economic status which are often exploited by their partners. Others have been lured by the murderers into what appeared to be a financially gratifying lifestyle. But the end result for some women is pain, suffering and death which should be condemned by all. Let freedom reign for our women.
