A 38-year-old cane-cutter was killed on the spot yesterday when he was struck down on the No.19 road while heading home from a wedding house at the nearby Warren Village, East Coast Berbice.
Dead is 36 year old Stayanand Mahadeo, called ‘Laro’, of No. 19 Village, East Coast Berbice. He is the father of three children aged 12, 10 and four,
Kaieteur News understands that Mahadeo was on his way home from a wedding house around 01:30 hrs when he was struck down by a vehicle, which did not stop.
He was reportedly left lying on the dark stretch of roadway and was run over by other vehicles.
According to his wife, Drupattie Tilakdarry, called ‘Debbie’, her husband of 13 years had returned from work earlier in the day. He left home around 19:00 hrs for the wedding house.
According to his mother Surujnaie Mahadeo, she was at home around 01:45 hrs when she heard someone calling for one of her sons. She then heard the person saying that ‘Laro’ was dead. She then informed her daughter in law and they hurried to the scene when she saw her son’s mangled body on the road.
The police were also already there.
The man leaves to mourn five brothers.
Double tragedy nearly struck the family when the victim’s cousin, Lakeram Guyanand, a taxi driver, rode his motorcycle over the body, after he was reportedly blinded by the lights of an approaching vehicle.
He lost control and crashed. He later regained consciousness in the New Amsterdam Hospital.
