Princess Timmerman, 90, was yesterday burnt to death in her Bella Dam home which caught afire sometime around 10:00am yesterday morning. As a result of the fire some 10 persons are now homeless.
According to reports, flames which started in the back half of the woman’s home of over 15 years quickly engulfed the entire house before spreading to the Puran’s Brothers Disposal INC. Office and storage building on the eastern side. Both buildings were completely burnt.
When Kaieteur News visited the scene, firemen already had the fire under control and were seen spraying portions of the burnt buildings from which smoke was still emanating. Firefighters later discovered the woman’s charred body between the debris.
The woman’s relatives were overheard blaming the disposal company for her death, chanting loudly, “Is Puran bun down the house.”
Kaieteur News understands that Timmerman who was also known as ‘Auntie P’ was on the upper flat of her house while her daughter and grandchild were on the lower flat when the blaze erupted.
Calls were made for help but there was no response and according to relatives, employees of the Puran Bros. just stood and watched as the fire spread, trapping the elderly woman inside.
According to relatives Auntie P would have turned 91 in November.
Meanwhile, Managing Director of Puran Bros. Disposal Inc. Lakenauth Puran, told the Kaieteur News that he was in Georgetown when he got the call about the fire. He said that he immediately rushed to the scene but by the time he got there the fire had already completed its destructive rage.
Puran said that his losses would be estimated to be over $18 million worth in stock and vehicles. Many important documents were also lost in the fire.
Kaleshwar Puran, another Manager at the company said that he along with some 15 staff members were in the office when they heard the calls of fire.
He said that he immediately called the Leonora Fire Station before proceeding to gather as much ‘important’ documents as he could and encouraged the staff to evacuate the building. However according to him, the fire tenders did not arrive in a prompt manner. “There was not much we could do,” Puran added.
He also expressed regret at the death of the elderly woman who he referred to as “Auntie P”.
Puran said that he was very familiar with the woman as the company would usually assist her with little hampers from time to time.
The real origin of the fire is unknown and investigations are continuing.
