– collected over $2M in cash and jewellery
Two brothers who allegedly blackmailed a 12-year-old boy into giving them over $2M in cash and jewellery were remanded last Friday on charges of demanding with menace.
Imran and Kareem Nandalall, who appeared in the Providence Magistrate’s Court, allegedly committed the act between July 1 and August 1.
The court was told that Imran Nandlall, who is a taxi driver, knew the victim’s father, who is a businessman, and he allegedly lured the child to his Eccles, East Bank Demerara residence.
Afterwards, his brother, Kareem Nandlall, allegedly informed the lad, via text message, that he had photographs of the boy smoking marijuana.
They allegedly threatened to show the photographs to the lad’s father if he did not give them money and jewellery. The boy subsequently gave the brothers an estimated $2.3M in gold jewellery, along with US300 and some local currency.
But last week, the family noticed that the jewellery and money were missing and contacted the police.
After being questioned, the 12-year-old informed the police of the alleged blackmail scheme.
On Monday last, the police set a trap and allegedly caught Kareem Nandalall turning up to collect more jewellery. Police said that the suspect led investigators to his brother, Imran, who also confessed to his part in the scam.
The suspects also reportedly carried the police to persons to whom they had sold some of the jewelry, and a gold chain was recovered.
Kareem Nandalall was charged with eight counts of demanding money and jewellery with menace and one count of attempt to commit a felony. Imran Nandalall was charged with one count of demanding money and jewellery with menace.
The Magistrate ordered them remanded and they are to return to court on August 14.
