– Detained friends tell cops
Three associates of shooting victim Akeem Yorrick have told police that he was with them when they surrounded the home of a Sparendaam Squatting Area resident they had accused of robbery.
Police have detained the men, who claimed that the robbery suspect, who is still to be apprehended, shot Yorrick before escaping.
Kaieteur News understands that police have checked the men for traces of gunpowder residue, since the girlfriend of the suspect alleged that Yorrick and his associates were all armed.
Relatives had alleged that Yorrick, 23, of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was heading to his girlfriend’s home, at around 22.00 hrs on Wednesday, when he was shot. They had suggested that he was merely “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
It is alleged that on Sunday, the alleged shooter had robbed one of Yorrick’s associates of money and jewellery. The matter was reported to the police, but the suspect was not arrested.
On Wednesday night, the robbery victim and some of his friends, including Yorrick, went to the suspect’s home. They reportedly surrounded the residence, since they expected the man to run to the back when he saw them. Yorrick was reportedly stationed at the back of the residence.
The suspect was reportedly sitting in his yard with his girlfriend when the ‘vigilantes’ approached. Yorrick’s detained associates claimed that on seeing them, the man fled to the back on the yard and shot Yorrick before escaping.
Yorrick was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital with a bullet wound to the stomach. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
