The West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council has named a strong eight-member team along with two reserves to contest the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) America Cup match that will also feature teams from Australia, Greta Britain, South Africa, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the host nation.
Five Guyanese are in the main eight, Lennox Braithwaite, Ransford Goodluck, Mahendra Persaud, Leo Ramalho and Dylan Fields along with the Trinidad and Tobago duo of Norris Gomez and Michael Perez and Anderson Perry of Antigua and Barbuda.
The two Reserves are Marlon King and Shelly Ann Hinds of Barbados, while the Non-Shooting Captain and Vice Captain are Major Denis John Nelson of Jamaica and Ryan Sampson of Guyana.
Head Coach is Trinidadian Carl Awong who will be assisted by fellow Trinidadian Ezikel Joseph and Antiguan, Thommy Greenaway.
Barbados will also be competing this match as a single team and will be led by Louis King as Head Coach, Javid Benjamin (Coach), Alfred Stuart (Assistant Coach), Jason Wood, Monica Ramsay, Lancelot Trotman, Ryan Williams and Donovan Baker.
West Indies Captain, Major Nelson informed that this is the first team match of this tour and will be shot at the 300, 600, 900 and 1000 yards ranges. He said that his charges are very upbeat and are looking forward to representing the West Indies with pride.
“The camaraderie is extremely high and we are looking forward to performing well.”
This match today Nelson noted will serve as good practice ahead of the World Long Range match known as the Palma match which will be contested next week.
“The Palma team is a team of 16 so eight shooters would have completed all the required zeroing and getting themselves in the right shape. What we have to do now on Saturday (tomorrow) is to get the other eight shooters up to a standard that would allow them to compete in the individual championships and then on to the Palma match.”
The tour so far Nelson said has been going well and as a team, the shooters have exceeded all his expectations so far.
“The togetherness and the desire to help each other and working towards a common goal which is to perform to the very best of our ability. I’m very happy in fact, with all members of this team and how much effort they are putting to make it a solid performance all around.”
So far in the NRA US Fullbore National Individual Championships, three West Indians have competed with Guyanese Mahendra Persaud finishing 83rd of 362 shooters from around the world. Countryman Lennox Braithwaite ended 208th while Trinidadian Norris Gomez placed 289th.
