The police force is not only about solving crimes, executing charges and prosecuting cases but about helping people do good in whatever way possible and more.
In that light, Police B Division (Berbice) Commander, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Griffith and Sports Officer of the Division Deputy Superintendent and Officer In charge of Traffic Boodnarine Persaud recently took time out from their busy schedule to make a significant donation of some cricket gear to West Indies U15 selectee Kevin Sinclair.
The presentation was done in the office of the Commander at B Division police headquarters, Couburg Street and Strand, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Sinclair is one of three Guyanese and the only Berbician elected to represent the West Indies against England in an U15 tournament in England over the August holidays.
Assistant Commissioner of police Christopher Griffith expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the officers and ranks of Police B Division. He stated that the force is extremely pleased to be in a position to hand over the set of gear to young Kevin Sinclair. He said that Sinclair has shown tremendous dedication, talent and promise to what he is doing over the years. As such the Police Force has no hesitation is continuing to assist him.
The commander stated that the youths are our future and the Police force will endeavor in every way possible to assist them in their development, in whatever career they choose, as long as it is beneficial to the society.
He congratulated Sinclair being selected to represent the West Indies and wished him well. He encouraged him to make the best use of the opportunity given and to make all proud. ”You are in a privileged position at an early age and you should go forward and become a role model,” he asserted.
He stated that, “I know how difficult it is at times for young athletes to make it to the top. So it is our desire to always assist persons, especially youths, who are willing to make a positive contribution to society.”
He said that the gear donated should go a far way in helping Sinclair achieving his goal. He further went on to urge him to “inculcate good discipline, be smart, listen and think before you act…..and it will take you a far way in your development.”
Deputy Superintendent Persaud in remarks stated that the set of gear is a token from Commander Griffith and the other members of the Administration of Berbice to assist young Sinclair as he ventures to represent the West Indies in England later in August.
He said that Sinclair who represented Guyana in the Regional U15 cricket tournament with much success has been a member of the Police cricket team since at the age of 13.
Sinclair is an all-round player who bats up the order and also bowls off spin.
In responding, Sinclair who was accompanied by his mother expressed his heartfelt thanks to Commander Griffith, Deputy Superintendent Persaud, Captain and Coach of the Police team Inspector Michael Newland and the rest of the members of the Police force for assisting him with the much needed gear. He said that he is very thankful for the assistance which will go a far way in helping him in his sojourn.
He will endeavor to do his best and to make all those who support him, his country and the West Indies proud.
His mother, Jonell Sinclair in expressing her appreciation, thanked all those who supported and stood in the gap for him. She said that without the tangible support it would have been very difficult for them to make it since the family hadn’t all the necessary resources to finance his needs. She wished Commander Griffith and his team God’s blessing and every success in their future endeavor. Sinclair received a suit case a pair of batting gloves, a thigh pad and a helmet from the police officers. (Samuel Whyte)
