“Akeem! Akeem! Akeem!” were the repeated calls of a 39-year-old mother last evening when she learnt that her first born was no more.
Believing that her 23-year-old son would have returned home, Natasha Yorrick clung to a blue and white tee-shirt calling for him as she stood on the verandah of their two-storey Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara home.
According to reports, Akeem Yorrick was shot dead around 22:00 hrs while on his way to visit his girlfriend in Plaisance Backdam. Reports are that he left his residence around 21:30 hrs.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, his father, Frank Yorrick said that he learnt of his son’s death while he was at a shop in the area.
The man said he heard that a group of men had surrounded the home of another villager at Plaisance Backdam, wanting to apprehend him in relation to a robbery. The man, known as ‘Kevin,’ was reportedly being sought concerning a robbery that occurred in the area on Sunday and it was his alleged victims who were paying him a visit.
Frank Yorrick said that while the men surrounded ‘Kevin’s’ home, waiting for the police to arrive and arrest him, his (Yorrick’s) son was passing the house at the time. He said the alleged suspect opened fire, hitting Akeem Yorrick in the process. Yorrick was reportedly killed by a single bullet to the abdomen.
He was apparently the only person hit, according to reports. As news of his death spread, neighbours and relatives flocked his residence, each questioning what had really happened to the young mason.
Meanwhile, relatives who had gathered at the Georgetown Public Hospital following news of Yorrick’s shooting lamented “He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
