Challenging conditions and a few hiccups with the marking saw National Fullbore Captain Mahendra finishing 83rd overall when the curtains came down on the 2015 National Rifle Association of America (NRA) US Fullbore National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio, yesterday.
Matching shots with the best practitioners in the world, Persaud, one of three West Indians competing in the championships, placed 83rd out of 362 competitors following three intense days of shooting.
He ended with a total of 584-46Vs with fellow countryman and reigning Caribbean Individual Champion Lennox Braithwaite placing 208th with a score of 572-51 while West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council President Norris Gomez of Trinidad and Tobago ended 289 with 554-29.
Following the final two ranges yesterday which was 600 and 1000 yards, the top 10 shooters went into a shoot off where Australian Matthew Pozzebon emerged as the 2015 NRA US Fullbore Individual champion with a score of 669-79. The top 10 shooters were allowed to take their scores from the three days of competition into the final showdown.
David Luckman of Great Britain came a close second with 668-79 while another Australian, Jim Bailey placed third with 667-72.
Yesterday, Persaud started off very well with an almost perfect score dropping a single point at the 600 yards range; 74-5. Braithwaite was close behind on 73-9 while Gomez managed 70-6. But even with their good performances it left the West Indian trio at 185th, 198th and 302nd in the battle for the top 10.
Conditions were not going to get any better with all the leading shots in the world aiming and firing with precision at the targets on another sunny, windy and chilly day. Paul Prinsloo of South Africa won the 600 shoot with a perfect score of 75-14 the same score recorded by Jon underwood and Steven Thomas, both of Great Britain.
The final range, save and except for the top 10 shots was the 1000 yards where Persaud could only manage 70-3, Gomez 69-4 and Braithwaite, 68-5. At this level, losing a single point can make the difference between winning and losing or placing 10th and 100th.
This range again saw perfect scores being recorded as had been the norm at every single range throughout the championship. Great Britain’s David Calvert won on Vs (12) from fellow countryman Chris Fitzpatrick and Australian Ben Emms who had 11 each, the trio recording perfect scores of 75 each.
For the Day 3 Aggregate, Persaudhad 144-8, Braithwaite 141-14 and Gomez139-10. It was won by Emms (150-23) who was followed by Paul Savage of Australia 150-20, Okker De Klerk of South Africa 150-19, Matthew Griffin of the USA 150-17 and Tom G. Rylands of Great Britain 150-15.
