…as cops respond to robbery call
Police ranks were forced to take evasive action and miraculously escaped injury when they came under heavy gunfire in the wee hours of Wednesday, while responding to a home invasion at No.48 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to information, eight bandits armed with guns and cutlasses entered the home of 38-year-old rice farmer Tagraj Tulshi, around 01:20hrs. The bandits used a chainsaw to cut a hole in the wall through which they gained entry into the house.
At the time six persons were at home – Tulshi, his wife Indranie Takean, 32, their three children ages 12, 8 and 4, and Tulshi’s mother-in-law.
Electricity had just been restored to the village when the men struck.
As nearby residents attempted to peep through their windows, men on guard opened fire to send a message that they should keep their distance.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits were “well placed”, with two heavily-armed men keeping guard on the road, two located in the yard and four in the house.
Those in the building began to ill-treat the family as they demanded money, jewellery and other valuables. The victims were slow to respond and threats were made. The man’s mother-in-law was doused with kerosene oil by one of the bandits, and he threatened to light her afire.
The bandits collected $100,000 and were in the process of continuing their rampage when the police arrived in the area, forcing them to abort their mission. The men left the house, but not before issuing threats that they would return. The ordeal lasted about twenty minutes.
The police were in No. 53 village when they received the call and responded immediately. As they approached the area they came under heavy gunfire from the bandits outside. The cops took evasive action and returned fire. There was a heavy exchange before the thieves escaped into the darkness.
Those in the house and in the yard were forced to join their cohorts and fled down a dam into the backlands. The police vehicle was damaged with two holes which appeared to be caused by a high-powered weapon.
Back up police patrols were dispatched to the area, but their efforts to apprehend anyone proved futile.
