The Guyana Police Force has accused the Kaieteur News of biased reporting as it relates to an article captioned “Local Chutney star sues Top Cop” in yesterday’s edition of the newspaper.
The article deals with a lawsuit by local chutney singer Mahendra Ramkellawan which was filed on June 01, 2015, whereby the Commissioner of Police, two other members of the Guyana Police Force and the Attorney General are being sued.
The singer/promoter accused the police of violating his right to liberty by arresting him two days before a major show he was promoting and forced him to pay a “debt” to the Princess International Hotel.
The police in a statement issued yesterday indicated that the State filed an Affidavit in response on July 27, 2015, which denied the allegations and indicated that the arrest of Mahendra Ramkellawan was in accordance with the law.
The police said that even though the State’s response is a public document in the same docket as Mahendra Ramkellawan’s claims at the Supreme Court Registry, the Kaieteur News “has deliberately omitted to indicate the State’s response to the lawsuit”.
“The Guyanese public should insist on professional journalism from the media houses operating in Guyana,” the police statement added.
Yesterday, when this newspaper contacted the Guyana Police Force for a copy of their response along with the supporting affidavit, they brushed aside the request, even though it was pointed out that it was Ramkellawan who had provided this newspaper with his court documents.
This newspaper had also contacted the Princess Hotel, who is also named as a defendant in the suit, but their response was also in the negative.
