Every year around this time, administrators of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club organize a special August Holiday programme that caters for the all round development of youths of the community while introducing them to the intricacies of football. Intent on addressing their commitment, administrators of that club have organized this year’s programme which got underway Monday morning last and is scheduled to culminate August 31.
More than 50 children from various communities comprise a part of the programme and when Kaieteur Sport visited the Tucville Ground, where sessions are being conducted, yesterday afternoon, the group was being taken through their paces on the field.
The man in charge of activities, coach, Calvin Allen, said that the objective of the programme is to mould the youths into rounded individuals, not only in football, but in other areas like social behaviour and ethics among others.
Towards this end, Fruta Conquerors administrators entertained several final year sociology students from the University of Guyana yesterday morning who tutored the children on techniques relating to life planning skills. Mr. Allen said that several other professionals from various sectors and institutions will be visiting the club over the coming weeks to impart valuable knowledge to the youths.
Former Assistant Competition Coordinator (GFF), Andrea Hall, also delivered a valuable presentation on the laws of the game. She spoke of the extensiveness of this topic and told the youths that it is important that they learn of these laws since FIFA is very stringent in the adherence to these statutes.
Mr. Allen further said that several other coaches will join him to deliver topics on various aspects of the game, among whom are, Chavez Hescott and Rodwell Jamaat among others. The administrators of the club are also bent on conforming to tradition and may take the children on guided tours to key institutions. During previous summer camps the children were taken on guided tours of Banks DIH Ltd, the National Museum and banking institutions. Mr. Allen said that (Fruta Conquerors) administrators are still working assiduously to ensure that this aspect of the summer camp become a reality. He said that each initiative is important since it aids in the plan to provide broad based, developmental activity for the children. “At the conclusion of the programme we hope to produce rounded individuals with a clear understanding of the fundamentals of life and football,” exhorted Mr. Allen. He also said that his team is focusing heavily on discipline as this variable is extremely important to success. Sessions continue at the same venue this morning. (Michael Benjamin)
