It seems like only yesterday but in fact one year has elapsed since the Black Hawks group had hosted a martial arts holiday camp that introduced practitioners to the intricacies of the sport. Once again, that group acts as host to a similar programme that got underway July 13 and culminates August 14.
Yesterday morning participants were being taken through their drills at the North Ruimveldt (Multilateral) Secondary School, under the expert tutelage of Sensei Garfield Newton. Sensei Newton explained that the yearly programme, which commenced in 2013, has been of immense benefit to the youngsters and he envisages similar results this year. He said that the sessions have attracted participants as young as 4 years old as well as practitioners in the open category.
Sensei Newton also said that the current sessions are also being used to prepare the practitioners for the Guyana Open Championships scheduled for August 16 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). The practitioners will also keep an eye on the yearly tournament scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago under the auspices of the North American Federation for Martial Arts.
The local players will firstly engage in a local competition, the Guyana Open Champion of Champions, against their counterparts from other Caricom countries. Black Hawks is the defending champion and will be keen to retain its title, while several other teams will nurture similar ambitions. Among the participants will be Trinidad and Tobago, which will field 4 teams, Guyana (12 teams), while Suriname, Canada and Barbados will field one team apiece.
The sessions yesterday saw some of the aspirants being taken through their drills. Garren Newton, a pint sized practitioner, was especially impressive as he addressed his katas. He is just 4 years old but his application to his moves truly belie this fact. His dad, Sensei Newton, is truly proud of him and disclosed that at 4 years old, he is currently the youngest kumite (sparring) champion in Guyana after commencing his trek at 3 years old.
Another youngster, Yusuf Hopkinson, also impressed with sharp moves that spells good for his future in the sport. Several young ladies also comprised a part of the group and were also engaged in stiff training, all focused on retaining the crown at the imminent Guyana Open Championships.
