The Berbice butcher who allegedly strangled and buried an elderly cattle and rice farmer in a shallow grave in the backyard of his Corriverton, Corentyne, Berbice home has been remanded to jail.
Asif Hamid, 21, of Corriverton, Berbice, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that between July 27 and 30, Hamid murdered Henry “Beminal” Lalman, 78, of No. 36 and 55 Villages, Corentyne, Berbice.
Lalman’s decomposing corpse was found last Thursday afternoon in Hamid’s yard. The accused was one of his alleged victim’s customers, and operates a butcher shop and restaurant.
Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgmohan established that the victim had been strangled, after observing that the hyoid bone was broken.
It is alleged that Lalmam disappeared after visiting some of his customers to collect money owed to him, including a sum of $220,000 for three cows he sold to the butcher.
Relatives made a report at the Number 51 police station.
Police got a breakthrough last Thursday when they received information that Lalman was seen visiting the butcher’s premises, but was not seen leaving.
The police, acting on this information, searched the suspect’s yard and eventually found the missing man’s body buried in a shallow grave under a tree.
Hamid is scheduled to return to court on the August 25.
