The two men accused of murdering Regent Multiplex Mall owner, Ganesh Ramlall, were further remanded to prison when they made their second court appearance yesterday.
The accused, 32-year-old Lennox ‘Soldier Man’ Roberts, of 2279 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo and Fazeel ‘Javed’ Bacchus, 21, of Lot 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, were taken before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
It is alleged that on July 5, last, at La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, they murdered the businessman during the course of a robbery. The charge was first read to them when they appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on July 20, last.
They were not required to plead to the indictable murder charge. Yesterday, as they stood before Magistrate Liverpool, they were told that on September 25, the court would fix a date for the commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the businessman’s death.
The court heard that the police have not yet completed their file and the men were ordered held in custody, at the end of the brief hearing.
The case will be prosecuted by Police Sergeant Sherwin Matthews while Attorneys-at-Law Melville Duke and Mortimer Codette are defending Roberts and Bacchus respectively.
According to reports, on July 5, last, Ramlall, also known as ‘Boyo’, had just returned home from a barbecue and had gone to use the outside bathroom. The 48-year-old businessman was reportedly confronted by four men who shot him to the head and chest and took away his jewellery, a wallet and escaped.
Ramlall was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The bandits prematurely aborted the attack when an alarm was raised by the businessman’s wife and neighbours. Ramlall’s relatives and friends responded by posting a $5M reward for information that would lead to the capture and prosecution of his killers.
