The young footballers from the Bartica team enjoy a photo op moments after defeating their Goshen counterparts.
Tyrese Gomes registered a brace in the 10th and 18th minutes and received admirable support from Joshua Jones (38) to secure a convincing 3-1 victory for Bartica over Goshen when Michael DeSantos, in collaboration with the Phoenix Sports Club, staged an U-13 goodwill game at the Bartica Secondary School Ground last Sunday afternoon. Abraham Webb responded in the 35th minute for Goshen but his effort was too little too late in a game of interesting twists and turns.
A decent crowd of family members and supporters witnessed an enthralling game that was fiercely contested. Gomes’ theatrics stood out in the first half and was responsible for his team’s 2 nil lead when the whistle signaled the end of that session.
The Goshen players remained undaunted and came out rejuvenated at the beginning of the second half. The passes were superb but the Bartica unit was up to the task, nullifying their every move. Goshen was then awarded a penalty kick after one of their players was brought down inside the box. The ensuing kick, taken by ‘Mini Man’ was miraculously saved by Zico Dos Santos, the youngest player in the match. A small pool of water also contributed as the ball landed, and was slowed up before reaching the ‘keeper.’
Goshen was gifted an opportunity to narrow the score from a free kick about thirty yards out but one of their strikers botched the chance which sailed over the head of the short Bartica custodian, Zico. Webb’s 35th minute effort narrowed the score but Jones changed the dynamics when he slammed in Bartica’s final success three minutes later to seal the deal for his team.
Meanwhile, the organizers said that they are heartened by the support of sponsors as well as those that attended the match. Mr. DeSantos said that the match is the first of what is expected to be a yearly feature. He said that so far, three communities are on board, Bartica, Karrau and Goshen while an invitation has been extended to Agatash community. The organizers also assured that the date for future tournaments will be soon released.
The match was preceded by a soccer clinic for boys 6-16 years old at the Bartica Secondary School Ground from Monday 20th -Friday 24th July. When the sessions started 21 participants were introduced to the intricacies of football but by the time activities concluded more than 65 boys had benefitted from the programme.
