Following the discovery of a sea defence breach at sections of Houston, East Bank Demerara a few days ago, residents are calling for it to be fixed urgently as their premises are under threat.
Accumulated water on some low lying yards is causing discomfort to residents who are blaming a popular contractor for tampering with a section of sea defence, which has resulted in flooding at high tides.
Residents in the community are adamant that the removal of a vital section of sea defence by this contractor is responsible for water from the Demerara River gushing through breaches along the sea defence.
Kaieteur News understands that the contractor was hired to build a fence for a company.
Seeraj Paul, a businessman, who resides at Lot 11 Public Road Houston, EBD, said that residents started experiencing the flooding on Saturday during high tide. He said that they are now forced to maneuver through approximately eight inches of contaminated water.
Paul explained that water from the nearby Demerara River is rapidly flooding their lands and destroying valuables.
“The contractors are digging a fence. And they dig the sea defence (mud). They tamper with the sea defence and the water just keeps flowing and flowing in from the section that they tampered with,” he said.
He continued,
“The water is draining from their land and flooding our place. We clean it out and Sunday morning when we woke it, it (the water) raised more high,” the businessman added.
Paul pointed out that the recent flooding has damaged a washing machine that is usually kept in his yard.
Another resident, identified only as ‘Wendy’, said that she has been living in the community for 45 years and had never encountered flooding during high tide. She explained that since a company began erecting a high concrete fencing, some residents began experiencing flooding.
The woman related that at high tide, she would see water gushing from the company’s compound onto several low lying properties.
She said that she has now been forced to implement sanitation methods for her family’s safety.
The resident said that she will write a letter expressing her concerns and have it sent to the company’s Chief Executive Officer, (CEO).
