The hard work, dedication and long hours of training put in by the members of team Guyana Karate College (GKC) under the watchful eye of Sensei Jeffrey Wong has led to success, enabling them to claim 2nd place at the recently held International Karate Daigaku World Cup tournament held in Toronto, Canada at the Ryerson University from 15th-19th July 2015.
Some of the countries that participated were Canada, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, USA, Philippines, Jamaica, Antigua, Puerto Rico and Guyana. Trinidad won the World Cup with 46 gold medals and Barbados coming in 3rd with 36 gold medals. Altogether 33 members from the GKC attended this event and were named the best supporting group at this event capturing38 gold medals total.
On day one the Guyana Karate College gained 12 golds in Team Bunkai. With day two came 9 more golds in team Enbu and day three, 9 golds in team Kata and 5 golds in individual Katas. The final day, 3 golds were attained in individual Kumite.
Some of the teams gold medalists were Rebecca Ramlal, Rachael Ramlal & Hannah Farinha (10-13), Alyssa Singh, Alyssa Ramotar (6-9),Jonathan Ramlal, William Grant & Aiden Singh(6-9), Aliya Wong, Alyssa Persaud &Tashanna Wong(14-16), Otto Harris, Yanick Rameshwar & Romeo Defreitas (14-16), Aubrey Bettencourt, Kenrick Cheeks and Roland Fanfair (40-49).
Individual Gold medalists in Kata were Alyssa Ramotar & Aiden Singh (6-7), William Grant (8-9), Aliyah Wong (12-13) & YanickRameshwar (14-15). In Kumite, gold went to Aiden Singh (6-7), William Grant (8-9) and Aliya Wong (12-13).
Also attaining silver and Bronze medals in team and Individual events were Alyssa Ramotar, Jonathan Ramlal, William Grant, Jonathan Robinson, Aiden Singh, Ronaldo Persaud, Jayden Hurry, Bruce Yong, Rebecca & Rachael Ramlal, Hannah Farinha, Emily Bettencoourt, Danielle Khan, Aaliyah Seeram, Aliya Wong, Alyssa Persaud, Tashanna Wong, John Mcgrath, Tyler Orderson , Antone Herrod, Otto Harris, Romeo Defreitas, Yanick Rameshwar,Aubrey Bettencourt, Kenrick Cheeks and Roland Fanfair.
Altogether the performance of Team GKC at the 2nd World Cup held by the International Karate Daigaku was a tremendous success. GKC achieved a total medal count of 84 of gold, silver and bronze.
