Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago had to share the points in their washed out game on Thursday at the Marsh Grounds in their opening game in the West Indies Cricket Council for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WICCBVI) Competition in St Lucia.
TT won the toss and inserted Guyana to bat on a patch of grass that was trimmed very low to create a temporary pitch on a football ground. The Guyanese had a disastrous start being 10/ 4 but eventually had a recovery. The Guyanese innings was eventually halted in the 23rd over when the score was 176/ 7 due to persistent rain. Kevin Douglas top scored with 72 with 3 sixes and 8 fours and was needlessly run out. The not out batters were Douglas Tika on 10 and Crystal Aulder on 8.
Due to overnight and early morning rain the game started an hour late at 10:30hrs resulting in the overs being reduced to 33 per team. Throughout the Guyanese innings there were a number of breaks due to the rain.
The game was played in the most inappropriate conditions for blind cricket. The pitch was made of grass that was trimmed low and the field had no cricket pitch. The organizers and officials had to create a pitch. The tall grass that was present on the area that was called the pitch made the ball bounce a lot and the B1 (totally blind) batters couldn’t cope in the early overs due to the quickness of the TT bowlers who were the B3’s (partially blind) that opened the bowling.
Guyana’s scheduled match against the Windward Islands yesterday was called off after an unfortunate event.
Manager of the team Theresa Pemberton told Kaieteur Sports that one of their team members, 28-year-old Gordon Sandiford died yesterday after a swimming outing.
“After Guyana’s game against the Windwards was called off yesterday they were taken to the mall and then to the beach, he had some problems in the water, he was frothing through his nose and mouth, he was given CPR when he came out and then the ambulance came and he died on the way to the hospital,” Pemberton said.
The Manager added that she sent a message via FB to the Director of Sports and also contacted Sandiford’s father.
“I inbox him, I need to know what to do as we will have to bring his body back and only the government can assist us.” Pemberton informed.
