Salesman Godfrey Layne made several trips along the East Bank Demerara Public Road yesterday. He had no clue that his 82-year-old mother, Daphne Layne, had died in a horrific two-vehicle crash along the same route.
The news came to him late yesterday evening, and he made the grim confirmation after seeing his mother’s mangled body at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The mishap which took Mrs. Layne’s life and led to two others being injured occurred when the hire car they were in crashed into a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) bus near Houston, East Bank Demerara at around 08.25 hrs yesterday.
Daphne Layne, of D’Aguiar Park, East Coast Demerara, sustained a broken right leg and lacerations to the face after the hire car, HA 5086, collided with the bus before crashing into a metal pole. She died in the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at around 18.00 hrs.
“Whole day I travelled up and down (the East Bank Demerara) and I didn’t even know that my mother got into an accident,” Godfrey Layne told Kaieteur News. From the injuries she sustained, he believes that she was in the front seat when the vehicle crashed.
Some of Mrs. Layne’s close friends said that she may have been heading to an East Bank Demerara Masjid when the tragedy occurred.
Hospital sources said that another female passenger was admitted to the GPHC’s Female Surgical Ward with a broken jaw. The hire car driver was reportedly scheduled to undergo surgery after swallowing pieces of glass.
Criswell Williams, who was driving the GRA minibus, PMM 3891, said that he was in the vicinity of Houston while heading north along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, when a hire car driver, who was on the eastern lane and heading south, suddenly overtook other vehicles and turned into his path.
He said that the collision caused his bus to ‘spin’ and end up facing south. After hitting the bus, the car slammed into a metal pole. The car was almost folded in half.
Williams said that passersby took the driver and two injured passengers from the car, and a Guyana Fire Service vehicle transported them to the GPHC.
