He has resided in the Bahamas for a number of years but his allegiance to his place of birth, the mining town of Bartica, has inspired Michael DeSantos to return to his homeland to contribute to the development of the youths.
Mr. DeSantos recently returned to Guyana on holiday and has teamed up with Phoenix Sports Club, an institution in his community, where he hosted a soccer clinic for boys 6-16 years old at the Bartica Secondary School Ground. Activities got underway on Monday July 20 and concluded Friday 24.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon, Mr. DeSantos said that he is very pleased with the response from the youths in the community. He revealed that the programme was very interactive and commenced with just 21 youths. “When the sessions started, 21 participants were introduced to the intricacies of football but by the time activities concluded more than 65 boys had benefitted from the programme.
The youths will get an opportunity to show off their newly acquired skill and knowledge when the organizers stage a U-13 game where Bartica will oppose Goshen starting at 16:00hrs. Mr. DeSantos has sponsored the trophy for the winning team while the winners and runners-up will receive medals. Several persons have donated to offset the cost of the prizes which includes 20 gold and a similar number of silver medals. Contributors include Natasha Harper, Wayne ‘Manny’ Caesar, Dacia Rampersaud, Gladwyn Tracey, Patsy Barker, Kamal Persaud, Mark Handy and Marthlyn Augustus.
Meanwhile, the organizers are assured of an action packed encounter and urge the support of those fans and patrons in the Bartica and adjoining communities.
