In just his second year as a Superbike racer, young Queen’s College student Kevin Persaud has become one of the growing stars in the sport and one to watch for when the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club stages its ‘National Race of Champions’ Meet on August 9, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The young Persaud, who will be astride a 2011 Kawasaki ZX6R at the upcoming Meet, started his career in November 2013, during the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship in the ‘B’ Class and returned with two sixth placed finishes, a performance he said really encouraged him to return.
Persaud whose father is one of the most sought after Superbike mechanics in the country, conceivably, had no other choice, but to become a racer, having grown up around those speed ‘monsters’ in his father’s mechanic shop, a place that is usually humming with activity come race time.
Speaking with this newspaper, the soft-spoken daredevil spoke of his eagerness to thrill fans at the South Dakota Circuit.
Exuding the confidence that is so necessary in the sport, Persaud said he returned to the track the following March and immediately made an impact, registering two second placed finishes and a third to crown a solid performance and at the same time established himself as a force to reckon with.
“I will be racing in the Super Stock category and some of the guys I will be going up against are Matthew Vieira, Nicholas Boodhram and a few others, but I’m confident that I can do well against them,” he told this newspaper.
He reckoned Matthew Vieira will be his toughest opponent, but siad he will be going all out to change the trend which has seen him play second fiddle to the young Vieira on every occasion.
“”I have lots of confidence that I will be on the podium come race day and I’m even hoping to claim the top spot ahead of my rivals,” Persaud said.
Kaieteur Sport wishes him every success in his endeavour.
