Director of Sport Christopher Jones told the gathering at the closing ceremony of the Regional U15 tournament, which was held at the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion, that the Government of Guyana (GOG) is committed to the development of Sports.
He said that they are wiling to work with any organization to ensure that sports expand, and the erection of Multi Purpose centres across Guyana is one of their plans. He stated that this will help the youths to participate in sports on a more regular basis which would help to indentify the talented athletes.
Jones congratulated both the Guyana and the West Indies Cricket Boards for organizing a successful tournament and lauded the Guyana team for their achievement.
Admirably led by skipper Ashmead Nedd, Guyana won the tournament for the second straight year after recording a 98-run victory over the Windward Islands in their final round game at Providence. Despite two of their games being abandoned the Guyanese finished with 19.5 points while runner up Windwards ended on 18.2 with one game being abandoned.
President of the GCB Drubahadur thanked the WICB for giving Guyana an opportunity to host the competition. He said that despite the tournament being hampered by the inclement weather, he is impressed with the talent of the players. He urged them to take the game seriously. The GCB head also congratulated the Guyana team.
WICB director and GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie pointed out that the WICB has a lot in store for the youths and lauded the match officials for a good tournament despite the inclement weather.
Barbados were given the award for being adjudged the most discipline team, while the Kimani Melius and Jason Alexander both of the Windward Islands were given the accolades for being the competition highest run scorer and most wicket taker respectively. Tahj Tavernier of Windwards received the award for the most dismissals by a wicket-keeper, while Melius took home the prize for the highest individual score (79 vs Jamaica). Nyeem Young of Barbados was the best all-rounder.
Match officials and members of the runner up team received medals while the victorious Guyana team collected a trophy and each member pocketed a medal.
