The inaugural Forbes Burnham memorial softball competition is set to bowl off on August 9. The tournament is being run under the auspices of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL Inc) and will be of 10 overs duration. Teams from regions 2, 3 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 will vie for supremacy with the winners from each area qualifying for the playoffs which will be held on August 29; the finals will be contested on August 30.
Entrance fee is $10,000 and the winning team will receive a trophy and $500,000, the runner up a trophy and $300,000, third place and fourth place a trophy and $100,000 each.
Teams are asked to provide balls for the preliminary games and those in Georgetown can contact Longsford Klass on 626-7259 or visit him at Regal Stationery and Computer Centre Seaforth Street for more information.
President of the GSCL Inc Ian John told Kaieteur Sport that each Region must provide a winner by August 23 to facilitate the play off and finals on the aforementioned date. He added that transportation will be provided for the winners of the respective regions to travel to Georgetown for the playoffs and finals.
Coordinator Mark Walkes said the competition is being organized to observe the 30th death anniversary of the late president cde LFS Burnham. He informed that a number of activities are planned including dominoes, chess, Karate and basketball adding that some of the events started with a church service last Saturday.
