The young man who is accused of throwing a lighted kerosene oil stove on his mother-in-law and her mother on July 28, at Huis’t Dieren Village, Essequibo Coast was on Friday remanded to prison by Magistrate Sunil Scarce until the 13th August.
Darshan Sarwan, 24, appeared at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court where the charge of murder was read to him. He is accused of killing 74-year-old, Ormowatie Chammawattie, a/k “Bhohoo” and her 54-year-old daughter, Caustury Chammawattie Persaud, a/k/a “Reshmie”.
Sarwan was cautioned not to enter a plea since he was told by Scarce that the offence was not bailable.
Darshan was however asked some basic questions by Magistrate Scarce. He told the court that he is 24 years old and has been residing at Pomona Main Road for the past two months with his common-law wife, Devika Persaud.
Sarwan further stated that he was living at 19th Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and only ventured to the Essequibo Coast two months ago where he did farming.
“I planted eddoes, plantain and sucker. He also told the court that this incident was the first offence that had brought him before the court.
A police report stated that on July 28, Sarwan who was residing in the same house with the two deceased came home around 17:00hrs.
The report added that Sarwan observed his wife, Devika, frying potatoes. An argument later ensued between Sarwan and Persaud. Sarwan subsequently left and later returned with a bottle of Banko wine, which the report stated he was consuming.
Moments later, it is alleged that Sarwan picked up the lighted stove and threw it on Persaud. Persaud and Chammawattie were sitting on a bed, eating.
Both women who were engulfed in flames were burnt severely. They were taken to the Suddie Public Hospital. The 74-year-old was however transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she succumbed Wednesday night last.
Caustry Chammattie Persaud, a/k Reshmie, died from septic shock and lung failure due to second degree burns. She was buried on Thursday.
