A Berbice butcher has confessed to strangling and burying an elderly cattle and rice farmer in a shallow grave in the backyard of his Corriverton, Corentyne home.
The decomposing corpse of Henry “Beminal” Lalman, 78, of No. 36 and 55 Villages, Corentyne, was found on Thursday afternoon in the yard of one of his customers, who operates a butcher shop and restaurant. Although the body was decomposing, Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgmohan established that the victim had been strangled, after observing that the hyoid bone was broken.
A grandson, Rajendra Persaud, said that his grandfather was missing since Monday, July 27 and the family had made a report at the Number 51 police station.
The victim fathered 11 children and lived at both No. 36 and 55 Villages.
According to Persaud, his grandfather journeyed to No. 55 Village, and then headed to Corriverton and Skeldon to meet with some customers to collect money owed to him. He understands that his grandfather, who also lends money, was supposed to have collected $220,000 for three cows he sold to the butcher who is now in custody.
But Lalman failed to return and a missing person report was made at the Number 51. Police Station, while a search was launched for the elderly man.
According to Persaud, relatives visited the suspect, who confirmed that Lalman had visited him. But the butcher also claimed that Lalman had collected his money and left for another premises at Crabwood Creek.
The family members subsequently visited the other premises, but were told that Lalman had visited there first before heading to the butcher’s residence. The relatives then again questioned the butcher, who stuck to his story.
In desperation, the missing man’s relatives posted advertisements in the newspapers and on television. They even offered a reward.
Police got a breakthrough around 16:00 hrs on Thursday when they received information that Lalman was seen visiting the butcher’s premises, but was not seen leaving.
The police, acting on this information, searched the suspect’s yard and eventually found the missing man’s body buried in a shallow grave under a tree.
The accused, known as ‘Hamid, and who is said to be an alcoholic, reportedly told detectives that he panicked after he was unable to pay Lalman for the meat he had bought.
Fearing that the cattle farmer would have informed his father, who was overseas at the time, ‘Hamid’ strangled Lalman and buried the victim in his backyard. He then covered the grave with a length of zinc.
Most of victim’s family members reside in New York and the police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
