Although self-confessed former death squad member Sean Hinds remains tightlipped about his role in criminal activity, senior Police officials say they are not giving up on getting a statement from him.
Hinds remained in custody up to late last night, three nights after he turned himself in to police with his lawyer, Nigel Hughes.
Kaieteur News understands that detectives questioned Hinds about a ‘serious offence’, as well as about his alleged links to a ‘death squad,’ which reportedly operated with the knowledge of senior police ranks.
However, they reported that he is not cooperating, claiming that he has nothing to say.
One of the issues that police wanted to question Hinds about was the allegation that he conducted surveillance near the home of Prime Minister and First Vice President Moses Nagamootoo.
Nagamootoo had stated that on Tuesday, July 14, the security detail attached to his home noticed a strange car parked close by.
He alleged that Sean Hinds was identified as the occupant of the car, and that the occupant of the vehicle sped away as the security staff approached.
Hinds has denied this claim.
He had said in a recent television interview that he was prepared to speak with Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, about the work of the ‘death squad,’ but had indicated that he was unwilling to cooperate with the police.
It is not yet clear if Harmon will accede to his request, given Hinds’ position with regard to the police.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum last evening told Kaieteur News that they have managed to secure a copy of Hinds television interview and they are in the process of examining its contents.
“I made an official request to the Director of HGP TV Channel 17 and he made a promise to supply the recording…today he did,” the Crime Chief said.
Breaking his silence on allegations that have swirled around him for years, the former bodyguard of fired Town Clerk Carol Sooba recently revealed on television that he was a member of a ‘death-squad’ which was set up to target criminals who were behind a spate of killings following the February 23, 2002 Mash Day jailbreak.
He claimed that the ‘death squad’ worked with members of the Police Force and he was among members who uplifted arms from CID Headquarters, Eve Leary.
It was headed by the late Alex Williams who had close links to former Home Affairs Minister, Ronald Gajraj.
Hinds claimed that he decided spill his secrets after attempts were made to implicate him in the killing of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing.
Hinds said that he has taken the precaution of “making two or three tapes” which would be distributed to the media in the event that he was killed.
Given his continued silence the police might have no choice but to release him after the statutory 72 hours have elapsed.
