The preparations for Emancipation Day are already in swing. Symposia on the struggles of Africans are being held in various communities and striking pieces of African clothing, tasty traditional dishes and art are on display in some quarters of downtown Georgetown.
To aid the preparations of the numerous cultural programmes leading up to the big day, Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, disclosed yesterday at a post Cabinet briefing with the media, that Government has approved the release of monies to active groups to help them fund those activities which will be held in their communities. He did not however, disclose what that sum would be.
Trotman said that the disbursement of the funds is in keeping with Government’s promotion of cultural activities and recognition of the contributions of African brothers and sisters in Guyana.
He said, too, that the Department of Culture within the Ministry of Education will help them in preparation for celebrations on Emancipation Day, to ensure they run smoothly.
