Three persons including a woman were on Friday last brought before the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and charged with the attempted murder of Michael Dorway, 32, of Main Street, Cumberland, Berbice. They were remanded to prison until the matter is called again on August 5, 2015.
The trio was positively identified by the victim on an identification parade. While the men were the ones who inflicted the wounds on Dorway’s body, the female encouraged them to kill him. Kaieteur News understands that she was cheering loudly, and shouting “Kill he; kill he” while her accomplices proceeded to chop the man about his body with cutlasses.
Dorway was released last week from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was hospitalized since July 10, 2015.
The badly injured man, who said that he is in a lot of pain, is at home almost helpless. He depends solely on his wife and other family members for assistance. Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, he told the reporter that his legs are not moving and his fingers are not functioning.
The traumatized man is saddened by the incident which quickly escalated from a simple request by him for a change in the type of music that was being played at the rum shop. Life has become hard for Dorway. “It’s little tight because every day I gotta go to New Amsterdam (hospital). And I am not even working; I can’t even think about working right now.”
According to reports, Michael Dorway, received chop wounds which a group of men and women had inflicted upon him following an argument at a ‘rum shop’.
Kaieteur News understands that Dorway on July 10, 2015, was imbibing alcohol at a rum shop some distance from his home when he requested a change in the type of music.
Apparently others were not pleased with his request and an argument broke out between him and them at the shop. He subsequently left.
The man’s wife, Kimmy, said that she was at home when she received a call and was told that her husband wanted to see her immediately; and that he was at the hospital. She said that when she arrived at the New Amsterdam Hospital her husband was in a terrible state. She was instructed to pack an emergency bag so that he could be transported to the GPHC for further treatment due to the severity of his condition. According to Mrs Dorway, her husband, while making his way home, three pickup trucks filled with men and women armed with cutlasses pulled up alongside him and the attack began.
He received chops to his back, right leg, the back of his head, face and wrist.
