Every once in a while a woman may dream about becoming a mother or experiencing motherhood, unfortunately for 21-year-old Akeisa Richardson that wonderful dream was cut short.
The young woman gave birth to her beautiful baby on Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) but died three days later.
According to GPHC “following her delivery she started experiencing seizures” Richardson was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where she was being monitored, but things eventually took a turn for the worse.
She subsequently passed away on Monday, July 27, 2015 at the medical institution.
A Post Mortem is to be performed soon.
Many friends of the deceased expressed their shock and disbelief of the loss of “such a peaceful soul.”
A close friend of Richardson who wished to remain anonymous lamented that it was the negligence of the public institution that had resulted in the young woman’s demise.
Guyana is listed among the five countries with the highest Maternity Deaths, a group which includes Haiti, Bolivia, Guatemala and Suriname.
One of the latest deaths locally was 20-year-old Yonette Williams-Grey who died after a C-section on May 10, last. The results from the post mortem which was performed by Dr. Nehaul Singh, at GPHC, revealed that the woman had died from compounded lung distress and hypertension (high blood pressure).
The first-time mother, who was 38 weeks pregnant, was transferred to GPHC from the Suddie Hospital after doctors had performed emergency surgery on her.
According to initial reports, the woman’s medical condition was compounded as a result of poor attention by nurses at the Oscar Joseph Hospital at Charity.
They however, managed to save her baby’s life. Grey had experienced Eclampsia, a rise in blood pressure during pregnancy.
