Romello Crawford was in a dominant mood when he rode away from the rest of the field to win the ninth annual Guyana Bank For Trade and Industry (GBTI) 50-mile cycle road race held on Sunday on the Corentyne Highway
from Corriverton to Adventure and back.
The race which was organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) began in front of Bank’s Corriverton branch and saw Crawford winning easily from his cousin Jebon Crawford who placed a distant second.
The race, which was for Berbicians only, saw some 28 cyclist taking to the starting g line.
Romello Crawford, just back from overseas, wasted no time as he took to the front and never relinquished the lead as he took all of the prime point prizes on offer.
Following the Crawfords home were Andrew Hicks, with the veterans Turhan Harris, Wasim Hassnu and Steve Ramsuchit rounding out the top six finishers.
In the beginner’s category, Balram Narine was the first over the finishing line with Curtis Dey, Roopchand Kidnauth and Alex Burnette rounding out the top placers.
Among the females, leading rider Marica Dick rode home easily ahead of Christine Matterson and Whitney Poyer.
The females started from Number 66 Village to the finish line, while the beginners rode from No51 Village to the finish line.
Manager of the Bank’s Corriverton Branch Keiola Blackman was pleased with the day’s proceedings. In brief remarks she thanked the participants for putting on a good show and promised the Bank’s continued support in the future.
She noted that sponsorship of the event was one way in which the bank gives back to the community.
Officials of the bank were on hand to start the race and distribute the prizes. The event was coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts. (Samuel Whyte)
