Despite a scare from sprinter Tevin Garraway, who narrowly missed Yoel Benjamin’s best jump
on his last attempt, Benjamin prevailed in one of the few finals yesterday when the Police Inter-Division Athletics Championship commenced at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora.
Benjamin leaped to 6.58m to win the Men’s Long Jump Final, ahead of Garraway, who sprang to 6.57m and Stephen Harris’ who had 6.46m. Benjamin gave ‘A’ Division the points ahead of two athletes from Headquarters, who finished second and third respectively.
Cindy Fraser won the Long Jump Women with 5.57m to initiate a clean sweep for ‘A’ Division in the event. Tandica Burgess posted a best jump of 5.54m for second while Tenisha Punch had 5.09m for third place.
Julio Sinclair threw 42.97m to win the Discuss Men ‘A’ Class while Ronald Payne threw 35.87m and Adrian Massiah 26.16m for third. These were the results available from the few finals held on the opening day of the competition that continues today.
