Last year’s runner up Waramadong thumped host Berbice High School (BHS) 6-1 in their quarterfinal matchup yesterday when the Digicel National Schools’ football championship continued at Burnham Park, New Amsterdam.
The win means Waramadong will clash with defending champions Christianburg Wismar in what is expected to be an exciting semi final game on Wednesday at Leonora.
Witnessed by a large crowd, Waramadong took control of the proceedings early on and came close to scoring within the first four minutes, but Collyer Daniels sent his shot wide. The visitors increased their pace and BHS found it difficult to match their opponents’ nimble footwork and attacking style of play and Ashton Ward gave Waramadong the lead in the 6th minute when he beat goalkeeper Gerod Humphrey to his right from inside the area.
Azual Medina doubled the lead when he found the back of the net in the 14th minute after receiving a pass from the left side of the box. BHS had an opportunity to reduce the lead shortly after but Derick Taylor was denied by goalkeeper Reese Gomez after he collected a pass from Demitri Thom inside the 18-yard box.
Waramadong continued to attack ruthlessly and could have increased the lead but Ward was denied by Humphrey. BHS appeared undaunted and tried desperately to find the back of net but found it difficult to get pass their opponents back four, and when they eventually did Thom sent his shot over the bar.
Waramadong made it 3-0 just before half time; Ward sent a cross in the area and Humphrey failed to clear Delmark George chip and the forward took advantage in slotting home in the 40th as his team enjoyed a 3-0 lead at the break.
BHS showed more purpose after the interval and Thom had a clear shot on goal which went wide.
George netted his double in the 64th after Ward provided him with a cross from the right side of the box before Shemar Arindell scored a consolation for BHS in the 79th minute.
Medina netted in the 83rd and 84th minute to complete his hat-trick and gave Humphrey an unforgettable game between the uprights.
