– Showstoppers, N/Ruimveldt into semis
Giant killers Agricola registered another massive upset when they defeated Queen Street of Tiger Bay 1-0 on penalty kicks to set up a mouth watering semi-final date with national champions Sparta Boss last evening, at the Pouderoyen Tarmac.
Playing in quarter-final action of the inaugural Second Ground Entertainment ‘Ballers in the Summer’ Knockout Street Football Competition Saturday night, the two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation and extra times ended forcing a penalty shootout which the East Bank Demerara unit won to add to their opening night victory over West Front Road ‘Gold is Money.
The other semi-final will see North Ruimveldt being entertained by West Side’s Showstoppers and this encounter also have the hallmark of an enthralling fixture.
Agricola took the lead in the 21st minute of the extra time interval when Kacy John scored, blasting his right footed strike into the centre of the net, after collecting a pass from the right side of the field. Queen Street, however, responded two minutes later through an Anthony Harris right footed strike from the left side of the field, into the lower right hand corner.
Sparta Boss then beat West Side Ballers by a 1-0 margin with the energetic Sheldon Shepherd ensuring the win with a sweetly timed right footer that raced into the back of the net after eight minutes.
North Ruimveldt secured their spot in the last four after squeezing past a courageous Samaroo Dam by a 1-0 margin.
Joshua Browne was the player of target for the Georgetown unit in the 19th minute, firing a fierce right footer past the last stop following a neatly laid pass from the experienced Gerald Gritten.
Showstoppers cruised past Brothers United 3-0 in the final fixture of the evening.
Nathan Allicock opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a right footer into the lower left hand side of the net. Four minutes later, it became 2-0 afterAnthony Harding took full advantage of a two-on-one situation with the final defender to tap into an empty net.
Marvin Josiah cemented the result when he scored in the 19th minute to book their place in the semis.
The winning team will pocket $200,000 and some of the sponsors of the event include Golf Motor Oil and A. Forrester Lumberyard among others.
