Female champion swimmer, Ms. Shunelle Dedideen guided Headquarters to the overall title when the inaugural Guyana Police Force (GPF) Inter-Division Swimming championships took place yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre.
Debideen who tallied 38 points after dominating the three other female swimmers in the 50 meters contests, ensured Headquarters tallied a mammoth 164 points to land the title well ahead of A-Division which managed 89 points. B-Division accumulated 36 points while C-Division brought up the rear on 29 points.
Following the official opening which was done by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration) Balram Persaud, the athletes and fans were treated to some exciting races.
The champion male athlete, Deon Primus of A-Division splashed off day on a winning note in the 50meters freestyle clocking a time of 28.2 seconds. Despite a narrow loss in the female version of this race to Devona Edwards (42.3s) her Headquarters colleague, Debideen (42.6) ensured there would not be such a repeat as she won all the other races including the relay.
Debideen went on to win the 50m backstroke (49.3s), 50m breaststroke (1:09.6), 50m fly (1:02.8) whilst anchoring the lone female team in the 50m freestyle relay; they stopped the clock at 4:06.9s.
Primus who started the day on a winning note had to settle for second in the 50m backstroke to Kenvall Campbell who clocked 37.9s to Primus’ 40.7s. Primus was back to winning ways in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 37.6s; 50m fly (36.2s) but had to be contented with the third place in the 4x50m relay which was won by Headquarters in a spirited performance.
In closing remarks, Deputy Chairman of the GPF Swimming Committee Kurleigh Simon thanked all the swimmers for helping to make the inaugural competition a resounding success despite many of the athletes having only mastered the basics of the sport, recently.
Simon noted that the GPF possess lots of talent in the sport and is looking forward to an even bigger competition in 2016. He also challenged the other division to ensure that Headquarters is given a bigger fight next time around.
The best swimmers from yesterday’s competition will be selected to represent the Guyana Police Force at the Joint Services level come October next while the GPF will also select the cream to compete at the World Police Games set for Columbia in September/October, this year.
