Jul 26, 2015 Editorial
Since the election of the APNU+AFC Coalition government on May 11, 2015, the nation has begun to see the first signs of ease from the vicious grip of the former PPP government which for the past decade has strangled the life out of the people. These are positive signs which should not be ignored or taken for granted by the new administration because they are critical for unifying the nation, lift the people out of their depressed mode, improve the country’s image and move it forward in the right direction. It is the change which the people have wanted and for which they have voted for.
In recent weeks some of the headlines that have dominated the headlines includeVenezuela’s claim to Guyana’s border and its threat to cancel the Petro Caribe agreement which meant the termination of the exchange of Guyana’s rice for Venezuela’s oil, the failure of the sugar industry, the recuperation of stolen state assets and the PPP claims of “witch hunting.” which is nothing new. It is common practice that political appointments of a former administration have always been replaced whenevera new government comes to power. This happens in the US, Canada, Britain and in most countries irrespective of the type of government. It is therefore hypocritical for the PPP to complain about witch hunting because it did the sameor in some cases worse in 1992 when it came to power. Not only did the PPP fire a number of senior employees of the former PNC administration, but it also took away land and house lots from some of them.
Interestingly, this has taken on greater significance in Guyana because even though the PPP has lost the election, it continues to mislead its supporters that it was cheated out of office by the APNU+AFC coalition. For the PPP to claim that the election was rigged when all the foreign and local observers had stated otherwise is further from the truth. It seems that the PPP however, is in denial that they have lost the election. In fact, senior members of the former government continue to engage in “trivia” politics, an approach which can be divisive.Disputing the election results does not give the PPP the right to ask for the Chairman of GECOM to resign or to boycott Parliament. After all, they are obligated to represent the interests of their constituents in Parliament.
Except for the PPP, everyone else in the country is at present in post general election mode and therefore the electorate expects the newly elected APNU+AFC Coalition Government to give an account of its stewardship for the next five years. They also expected the newly elected government to expose and direct attention to the failures or shortcomings of the last Government, and to put forward vigorously alternate social and economic policies and programs to create employment, improve the wellbeing of the people and move the country forward.
For more than a decade, Guyana has been lowered into the precipitous valley by the former government’s inhumanity to man. The nation has been misdirected, shipwrecked and left stranded in treacherous and murky waters. The vision of nationhood has been serially impaired by the excesses of a group of oppressors masked as the Government. The former administration has unforgiveably betrayed the nation’s legacy for which our ancestors have labored and sacrificed so selflessly and painstakingly.
No one, not even the founding fathers of the nation could have predicted that the country would have fallen into the hands of unscrupulous, selfish, vindictive and uncaring leaders. But as they lay dead, their greatest fear came to pass. However, thanks to the blessings from above, the citizens have genuinely wanted change and have used the democratic system and voted for change on May 11. 2015. The people have elected a Coalition Government that has set them free from the shackles of oppression. It is time for us all to sit up and take note and give thanks to the creator for his intervention. A nation has been set free. Free at last! Free at last! Thank the Almighty, Guyana is free at last!
