Coach Rodrigues pleased with progress
By Franklin Wilson
Guyana’s flagship female football team, the ‘Lady Jags’ yesterday wrapped up a one-week camp in Guyana with a match against the reigning Digicel Schools Football Championship champions, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School at the Leonora Track & Field and Football facility which they lost, 6-0.
But Head Coach Mark Rodrigues was not worried by the score-line, rather, he disclosed that he was pleased with advancement of his charges during the time they spent together in Guyana following a similar camp held in Canada, last month.
He said the game was played so the Technical Staff can assess the progress of the players in terms of them implementing what they have been taught in the sessions they had during the week.
“We’ve been doing really well in our defensive third and middle and we were in the offensive third.”
Rodrigues noted that the Christianburg/Wismar lads are tall, fast and aggressive but the plan they had was to keep the ball on the ground and penetrate that way which saw no balls being served in by the Linden based school.
The second half he said saw the ladies executing the plan admirably as they were able to get in behind the opposition on
multiple occasions.
“It was only the boy’s speed and athleticism hat saved the ball from going into the back of the nets; but overall, to culminate the camp, this was brilliant. It was exactly what we were hoping to see in terms of the speed of play; how they are connecting it, how they are applying the system in all areas of the field.”
The ‘Lady Jags’ also played against a Georgetown Under-17 boy’s team and lost 4-2 after taking a 2-0 lead. Overall, the objective set out prior to the camp of ensuring the team gels together was achieved, Rodrigues reported.
“The Technical Director, Claude Bolton and I had spoken about a system of play that we wanted to apply since we left Toronto and although we had to crash course it, it was incredible to see how quickly they got it and adapted to it. TD Bolton and I worked together in the sessions and I think that was what really helped.”
Rodrigues alluded to the fact that the combined efforts and knowledge of Bolton and himself worked, coupled with the work ethic of the ladies.
Next on the agenda for the team is the CFU Olympic Qualifiers that would be hosted in the Dominican Republic. The Lady Jags are slated to arrive there on August 19 where they will face St. Kitts and Cuba also.
Coach Rodrigues said it would be nice for the ladies to have a game prior to travelling to the Dominican Republic. “It would be fantastic if we could have a game between now and then on a weekend against a female national team somewhere to get the girls to adapt to the speed of play against a true women’s national team. I’m going to ask the GFF if it’s possible due to funding but it it’s not, we’ll be ready.”
The players would be given a specific training plan that they will have to commit to in the next three weeks ahead of the qualifying matches. Rodrigues noted that it would be a measured plan which would see the players having to do things, measure them and send them back to the Technical Staff so that they can assess and see that they are coming in where they need to be.
