Dustin Crawford, of Public Road, Friendship, East Bank Demerara, lost his life after he was hit by a hauler truck along Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, earlier this week
Yesterday, the suspected killer driver was identified as 40-year- old Greg Stewart.
Stewart made his first appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to three charges, one of which was causing of death by dangerous driving.
It was alleged that on Wednesday July 22, 2015, at Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Stewart drove motor lorry GJJ 7168 with trailer TAA 2203 in a dangerous manner to the public and caused the death of Dustin Crawford.
It was also alleged that on the said date at Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara Stewart failed to stop motor lorry GJJ 7168 with trailer TAA 2203 after causing an accident.
It was further alleged that on July 22 at Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Stewart failed to render assistance. He did not help get the injured Dustin to a registered medical facility. The driver pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Stewart’s lawyer told the court that his client resides at 707 Caneville, Grove, East Bank Demerara, and is married with two children. He is an employee of Docol Gas Company and has been a driver for 20 years with no prior records.
He deemed the case as not one of the usual cause of death accidents, in his defence he said Stewart was turning into the street which is 12 to15 meters in width and he was driving not more than five miles per hour, he noted that his client was not speeding and not under the influence of alcohol.
He further stated that his client was not involved in this accident and that the truck is a heavy duty vehicle. If it did indeed run over the deceased it would have crushed the body.
However he claims that in his report from the police no blood stain or damage was found on the vehicle.
The lawyer told the court that Stewart was not aware that he was in an accident and as such could not have rendered assistance for something he was not aware of.
He asked the Magistrate for reasonable bail and ensured the court that his client will attend all trial when the need arise since he is not a flight risk.
Prosecutor Dinero Jones strongly objected to bail based on the facts of the police.
He told the court that the defendant was driving at a fast rate of speed and he turn into the street with that same speed. The trailer hit the deceased then ran over the body.
The Post Mortem examination, according to Jones, showed multiple crush injuries.
He further said that an eyewitness saw what had transpired, followed the defendant and summoned the police. The witness gave a clear identification of the accused since he saw his face and the vehicle.
Jones asked the Magistrate for time to complete the investigation, the lawyer also requested to see the Post Mortem report.
Greg Stewart was subsequently remanded until August 12 for his next appearance.
According to eyewitness reports, the accident occurred shortly before 13:00hrs. Eyewitnesses said that Crawford had just disembarked an East Bank minibus and had been walking on the southern half of the Flour Mill Road when tragedy struck.
A 12-wheeler hauler truck turned into the street and collided with him.
