Those amateur boxers that were supposed to have graced the ring tonight for the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Novices Boxing Championships will now be required to temper their enthusiasm since the Guyana Boxing Association organizers have decided to postpone the tournament.
Kaieteur Sport was unofficially informed that the new date for the championship is 7-9 August. This newspaper was not officially informed of these developments since tournament Director, Terrence Poole, apparently did not regard as important, the dispensation of such information. Notwithstanding, our source disclosed that the boxers were told of the postponement which came devoid of an explanation. The Novice Boxing tournament is for beginners and is usually the first tournament, staged during the early part of the year thus making way for the Intermediate and the Open Boxing Championships.
It is still a puzzle why the tournament was planned at such a late stage of the year and even then it seems as though the organizers are still to put the requisite modalities in place. Efforts to contact Mr. Poole failed as his cell phone was first turned off during the morning and subsequently rang out in the afternoon.
When the tournament eventually gets underway, boxers from several gyms will vie for top honours.
The intense rivalry between the boxers of the Republican Boxing gym and those from the Guyana Defense Force will resume but fans could also expect slugfests from pugilists out of several other gyms including the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Young Achievers, Harpy Eagles, Ricola and Caryll’s Boxing Gym among others. Kaieteur Sport will report on other details over the coming week.
