As Guyana continues preparation for Local Government Elections (LGE), staffers of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday participated in a refresher photography training programme.
GECOM disclosed that the training included an element for fingerprinting.
“This training programme was planned, organized and executed by members of the Voter Registration Department, and was specifically designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge of the sequential procedures and processes to be carefully followed when photographing persons and source documents using a digital camera.”
With regards to the proper methods of fingerprinting, GECOM explained that this part of the programme was done to ensure that staffers are properly trained to take legible fingerprints are in keeping with GECOM’s standards.
“This one-day refresher training programme was equally divided into two main sessions, commencing with the theoretical session in the morning, followed by a practical session in the afternoon.”
Participating in the training were staffers from GECOM’s Kingston headquarters- Clerks I and II- as well as others from offices in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.
GECOM disclosed that it is currently refining all its managerial, administrative, logistical and operational mechanisms to ensure that they are comprehensibly ready for the “efficient, free fair and transparent conduct of Local Government Elections, whenever a date is announced by Government.”
GECOM’s Chief Election Officer, Keith Lowenfield, hosted a part of the training.
Local Government Elections were last held in the 1990’s. There has been growing pressure both locally and from overseas for these elections to be held.
