What began as a regular day for a young rugby coach ended tragically yesterday, when the young man was killed after he was hit by a hauler truck in Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
The family of Dustin Crawford, 20, of Public Road Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was plunged into mourning when word of the young man’s death spread. Crawford lost his life after being hit by the hauler truck along Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
According to eyewitness reports, the accident occurred shortly before 13:00hrs. Eyewitnesses say that Crawford had just disembarked an East Bank minibus and had been walking on the southern half of the Flour Mill Road when tragedy struck. A 12-wheeler hauler truck turned into the street and collided with him.
From all reports, the driver of the truck did not stop to offer any assistance but instead made an escape. Furthermore, numerous eyewitnesses said that the truck had been one belonging to the Demerara Oxygen Company Ltd (DOCOL) which is located in Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
One of Crawford’s co-workers, who asked to remain anonymous, explained that he had been working with the Guyana National Rugby Union as a coach at a summer camp for children aged 8 through 17. That day, he had been scheduled to turn up at the flour mill where the children were being treated to an educational tour of the facility.
However, Crawford never made it.
Another co-worker explained that they had been at the flour mill when they received a call informing them that someone had just been hit.
“We decided to call fuh see how far he deh. When we call the phone somebody answer the phone and seh, ‘The owner fuh de phone just geh knock down’,” the woman relayed. She said they ran out quickly and found Crawford sprawled on the road.
At Crawford’s Friendship home, distraught relatives had gathered at the news. His mother, Susan, was inconsolable but managed to explain that her son had received a call in the morning informing him to turn out to work. He had been scheduled to arrive at the Agricola location at 13:30hrs, she said. However, just over an hour after he had been slated to turn up to work, the family received the distressing news.
Another friend of the young man explained that Crawford had only left the Georgetown Technical Institute last year while he had been with the Guyana Rugby Union for a few years.
Crawford was the second of four boys and the father of a one-year-old baby girl. His body was taken to a city funeral home where he was positively identified by his father.
A senior police official disclosed that the driver has been taken into custody and was assisting the police with investigations.
The official added that the police could not say whether the hauler truck had indeed been registered with DOCOL.
