Fishermen charged after break-in at SOL

Two Albouystown residents accused of burglaring the warehouse of SOL at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, appeared yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with Break and Enter and Simple Larceny.
Devon Allicock, 22, of 33 James Street, Albouystown and Michael Gomes, 34, of 31 James Street, Albouystown were both arraigned before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan and pleaded not guilty to the charge.
It is alleged that between July 17 and July 19, last, at Agricola they broke and entered the warehouse of SOL (Guyana) Inc and stole 135 cases of Romula Lubricant oil. The articles were the property of the said company.
Allicock and Gomes were both released on $200,000 bail each.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, presented the Prosecution’s case. He informed the court that on the day in question, around 20:00hrs, the police received information about a robbery at the company.
The lawmen then proceeded to the company and were confronted by four men.
A confrontation ensued between the men and the police returned fire at them. Two of the men managed to escape in a boat via a river at the back of the company.
The Prosecutor said that checks were made in the compound and the stolen items were discovered missing. Jones added that the defendants were caught and the charge was instituted against them.
Attorney, Euclin Gomes made an application on behalf of the defendants. He said that his clients were catching fish when the police came chasing after some persons who had allegedly broke into the warehouse.
Additionally, Gomes told the court that Michael Gomes was shot to the left arm and leg by the police. The lawyer added that he is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries. The Attorney requested that both men be released on reasonable bail because they have no previous convictions or pending matters before the court.
Attorney, Euclin Gomes said that the men are not flight risks and will return to court to answer to the charges. He said, too, that they are both fishermen.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, did not oppose bail but asked for it to be substantial.
This matter has been adjourned until July 29, when the defendants will appear before Magistrate Fabayo Azore for report.
