In the issue of Kaieteur News for Tuesday, September 28, 2010, an article appeared on Pages 1 and 3 under the heading “Skeldon GM resigns- Estate property reportedly found at his home”- with the following defamatory words -“a senior official of the Skeldon Sugar Factory has resigned amidst allegations of misappropriation of property belonging to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo)”.
The article quoted officials of the Corporation as saying that General Manager of the Estate, Vishnu Panday, handed in his resignation last week after air conditioning units, among other things, were found at his Turkeyen home, East Coast Demerara. The units were said to belong to the estate. In addition, mention was made of a tractor belonging to the estate. The report published was based upon information that the newspaper believed to be reliable. The newspaper has, however, subsequently ascertained and now recognizes that there was no foundation to these allegations and it regrets that they were ever made.
“We are happy to take the earliest opportunity to unreservedly withdraw the said publication and make amends by correcting our error and expressing to Mr. Vishnu Panday our regret for any distress or embarrassment and inconvenience caused to him by the publication of the original article.
“We trust that this apology and retraction will alleviate any hurt caused to him by the previous publication.”
