West Indies Cricketers Veerasammy Permaul and Tremayne Smartt copped the top two Berbice Sports Awards for 2014 when the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) hosted the 3rd Edition of the Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards which were hosted at the St. Francis Community Developers Training

Permaul was named Berbice Sportsman of the Year while Smartt won the Berbice Sportswoman award. Volleyball Coach Levi Nedd received the Berbice Sports Personality of the Year award while Berbice Sports Organisation of the Year Award was presented to the Flying Ace Cycling Club of New Amsterdam.
Minister of Education with the responsibility for Sports, Youth and Culture Dr. Rupert Roopnarine and Director of Sports Christopher Jones delivered remarks at the ceremony. Dr. Roopnarine in a scholarly and well accepted feature address described the Club as a role model organization which needs to be emulated across Guyana.
The Minister stated that if there are ten other clubs in Guyana like the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, the work of the Government would be made much easier. He spoke widely on the importance of education and discipline in the quest for success and urged the youths in attendance to stay in school and obtain an educational background. Dr. Roopnarine also congratulated the four awardees.
Jones praised the Club for its outstanding service to Guyana and pledged his full support to the organization. He congratulated the awardees on being honoured and urged them to be role models to others.
RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in remarks stated that the Gregory Gaskin Berbice Sports Awards is organised on an annual basis by the Club in memory of the late CEO of Cops Security and is sponsored by his widow Noreen Gaskin and Sentinel Security Inc.
The main aims are to identify and honour outstanding Berbicians who excel in sports and to provide positive role models for youths to emulate. Members of the general public and sports organisations are invited to submit nominations and then a panel of judges led by veteran sports administers Gregory Rambarran and Hilbert Foster selects the eventual winners after careful deliberations.
Foster hailed the awardees for keeping the flag of Berbicians proud. The long standing CEO/Secretary urged them to uphold their high personal standards and to strive harder for more successes.
The Club, he stated is quite passionate about recognizing sporting heroes and noted that unlike other award ceremonies in Guyana, the club makes sure that the awardees leave with a lifetime of memories.
Each awardee received a trophy, medal, framed Certificate of Excellence, collection of gifts and was treated at a special luncheon. Foster also expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of Sentinel Security Inc. for their sponsorship of the programme.
Operating Manager of Sentinel Security Inc. Cedric Browne stated that his Company was impressed with the work of the Club and was pleased to be associated with the Gregory Gaskin Memorial Sports Awards.
He pledged Sentinel Security Inc.’s continued assistance. Browne also congratulated the four awardees and urged them to continue serving the County with pride. Permaul was recognized for his outstanding performance for Albion, Berbice, Guyana, the Amazon Warriors and the West Indies while Smartt also had outstanding performances for Tucber Park, Berbice, Guyana and the West Indies.
The West Indies female pacer was also named in the top 20 bowlers in the world at both the T20 and 50-overs levels in 2014. Levi Nedd was recognized for his outstanding contributions to volleyball in 2004 as Coach of the GUYSUCO Training Centre, Berbice and Guyana.
The Sport Organisation of the Year award was given to the Flying Ace Cycling Club for its role in keeping cycling alive in Berbice by way of organizing numerous events.
The Awards ceremony is coordinated by the cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, namely, Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Second Division, Metro Female and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-21 and First Division Teams.
